ibelieveinopen: 51 candidates signed up

Jennifer Bell
As an update, over 50 MP candidates have signed up to ibelieveinopen.ca, including one Liberal.  The current voter to candidate signup ratio is nearly 2:1.  :-)

I have to find a way to reach more voters!

Agreed, these are fantastic results so early on.

This maybe a bit odd, but perhaps some candidates could help? It would
be in the best interest of some candidates to sign up and email
supporters in their district, asking for the message to be forwarded.
Both the Greens and NDP have had a lot of sign-ups, and it could help
them to have voters sign this, only to see the Tories lag on the issue
or not sign.

That of course assumes that some of their strategists are keen enough
to notice this potential.

And hey, if the Tories don't want this used as political points
against them, they could all sign up and follow the pledge.

Hello

One way I know is to use Facebook groups and Fan pages, and to get bloggers to pick up the story.

I've created a Facebook group, a Facebook Fan page, and emailed Michael Geist, a prominent blogger about Canadian technology issues.

If people on the list who are Facebook members could join the group and become a fan we could spread awareness of this issue very quickly.

To join the group, go here:
http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=32397341985

To become a fan, go here, login to Facebook, and click "Become a fan":
http://www.facebook.com/pages/ibelieveinopenca/27284937139

Jennifer, please friend me on Facebook and I'll add you as admin to the group and Fan Page.

I've only recently joined the list, but I'm enjoying the energy and enthusiasm around these issues.

Best regards,
Weston

Ooh!  Facebook group collision.  We had the same thought -- I just made a facebook group too.   I liked the way your groups looks better, so I changed mine to look like it:

http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=37307018274

I already had a few people sign up to my group, and I'd just linked to the landing page when emails are confirmed.  Would you and Daniel mind joining that one?

Thank you for emailing Michael Geist!

geist has already picked it up (i think i might have emailed him,
can't remember):
http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/3403/196/

I posted here:
http://datalibre.ca/2008/09/25/do-candidates-believe-in-open/

and here:
http://hughmcguire.net/2008/09/25/does-your-candidate-believe-in-open/

jen, you should set up google alerts for ibelieveinopen & monitor
technorati ... to see who is talking about, linking to, writing about
the project. then link to blogs linking to ibelieveinopen ... it helps
the webby ecosystem, and keeps people engaged with the project when
you link back to them.

Sorry about that, I should have known better and done a search first. I've pointed to your group.

You know, that's a great idea.  Candidates in the US used signing on to Change Congress as a press release opportunity, eg. here:

http://www.amit08.com/news/pressReleases/pressRelease_20080325.jsp

I'll do up a pre-formatted press release example and send it to the candidates that have signed on.

The Facebook group seems to be going strong.  Almost 40 people overnight, over a hundred more invited.  Wow.

Use http://cancan.waglo.com/candidates-canada-2008.csv to find all the candidates (from 21 parties, that's 1601 in total).

Not sure what is the holdup for that party... it was once the official opposition!

I apologize if I sound ignorant, but could someone explain to an American what 21 parties mean?

We've got the Green Party that is somewhat popular, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around 21 parties.

Are these parties fairly inconsequential -- serving to bring a particular subject to the debates, but not a real part of the power structure of Canadian politics?

Who are the two parties that primarily pass the power baton back and forth from one election to the next?

Here is the Elections Canada database of candidates, divided by the
party listed.

http://www.digital-copyright.ca/election2008/candidates

Only a few are credible parties running over 300 of 308 federal
ridings, plus the Bloc which is .. well .. special.

While the Liberals and the Conservatives continue to try to drive us
towards the US-style two-party (or 1.2 party, depending on how you count
it ;-) system, but we have others that would prefer a more International
style system that includes more voices.

Canada, USA, UK and India are the only countries still using the
antiquated First Past the Post voting system.

Well... the assumption was that without a French translation, the Bloc wouldn't be too enthusiastic.  But!  I see that the pages have all been translated now, so I should be able to get that going in short order.

I also want to get the source on github this week, as there have been a few offers of help with the code base.
