Attention assignment and news editors;

Alan Cairns from the communications branch of the Ministry of Government Services here.

We are assisting with media outreach for Ontario’s Open Government Engagement Team, a group of renowned experts and innovative thinkers assembled by the province to help kickstart Ontario’s open government initiative.

Open Government is a global movement that is gaining momentum each and every day. It encourages governments to share information, empower citizens and bring more people to the decision-making table.  Opening up government strengthens our democracy and access to high-value data helps businesses grow, spurs innovation, and solves problems that affect all of us in our everyday lives. Democracies worldwide realize that modern technology makes it possible to share ideas and information, and there is a need to share information and engage with the public in entirely new ways.

The engagement team will be in Ottawa tomorrow afternoon - Tuesday Jan. 14, 2014 - and will hold a public consultation meeting at the University of Ottawa – in the Social Sciences Building, Room 4007, 550 Cumberland Street, Ottawa. The event is from 1 to 4 p.m.

Minister of Government Services John Milloy will be on hand for introductory remarks and media interviews immediately following his remarks.

For your convenience, I have attached a media advisory for tomorrow’s event and a backgrounder on Open Government initiative (Both documents are here in English and French).

I would invite you to speak with some members of the Engagement Team in advance of the meeting:

Engagement team Chair:  Don Lenihan:       [hidden email]        613-795-6828

Expert team members:        David Eaves         [hidden email]

                                                Hirad Zafari          [hidden email]             416-871-3343

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
