Greetings all!
I just discovered something you might already know about, but just in case! It seems that all Federal Departments have to disclose where funding, acquisitions, tavel (Grants or contracts etc.) that are 10-25K and above . I was looking up information about an agencies grants allocated for the first quarter of 2010 and that is how I discovered it. Looks like the disclose info can be found on the bottom left of the navigation bar of all Fed. Sites. http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/corporate/proactive_disclosure/index.shtml http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/com/deptmini/prodiv-eng.php http://www.statcan.gc.ca/public-publique/proactive-eng.htm I feel a bit naive for missing this, but alas, better late than never! -- Tracey P. Hi Tracey,
This is the government expenses project that I completed over the past three years. It's all online at www.governmentexpenses.ca It's kind of hard to get people to notice this (sometimes I feel like I need a PR person because I hate having to try and promote the stuff I do, but it really does need to get out there into the public eye). It was a huge complicated project to consolidate and report on all of these hundreds of thousands of individual expenses that are spread throughout hundreds of departments and tens of thousands of pages per department, each with their own unique format and conventions. It's all there though, consolidated into one master database with some sample reports that I've generated and some graphs to show the spending trends in each department. http://www.governmentexpenses.ca That's all the MP expenses declared under the proactive disclosure regulations. Don't bother trying to filter through the tens of thousands of pages on the government of canada site. It's a convoluted maze, and you can't get any summary information, particularly not across departments, or government wide. Check it out and let me know what you think. FEEDBACK WELCOMED!! The thing I'm noticing lately with the news storm about it is that a lot of expenses which seem like they should be proactively declared under this mandate aren't. Like for instance Russ Hiebert flew his family back and forth between Ottawa all year, but only declared just under $6000 in travel expenses. I find that to be a bit odd, and probably against the proactive disclosure requirements. Cheers, Drew On Wed, May 26, 2010 at 3:17 PM, Tracey P. Lauriault <[hidden email]> wrote: Greetings all! |

I didn't do the contracts or grants when I did the travel and hospitality expenses because quite frankly there are so few of them that it hardly seems worth it. On the other hand there are hundreds of thousands of travel and hospitality expenses which is all consolidated into a master database now. Plus which I did it all pro-bono and very few people seem to have even noticed it yet let alone have any interest in it, and I've pretty much reached my limit of what I can do for free and still afford to eat. So if there is some sudden interest in getting the contract and grant data I might consider doing that as well at some point.

By the way, I realized after the fact once I had completed this project that there were a few different groups trying to do this very same thing for many years. Teams of developers working on the project and not really making any progress. I got the idea from reading a Maclean's article in 2007 and started the project last year part time. I finished it single handedly a few months ago (with minimal "help" from a friend in Ottawa) then realized that I had pretty much just usurped the project from these groups and done it rambo-style, completely unbeknownst to me at the time. lol.
Anyway, I just quietly completed the project while others talked endlessly about it and it's all there now, so like I said, feedback would be much appreciated. Cheers, ~Drew

To note: I believe the folks at VisableGovernment.ca were also working on a collaboration to compile government expense reports.

Yes, there were at least a couple of groups that were trying to accomplish this and gave up. I can certainly see why. Anyway, the hard part is done now, it just needs to be promoted and used as a watchdog tool to keep MP spending in line (as I think was originally intended by the proactive disclosure regulation). Anybody interested in helping out with that? If not, then I may just end up not maintaining the project, which is a shame because with a little upkeep this tool can accumulate all the new expenses every quarter as they are published and report on the latest. I can't really afford to do literally all the promotion and watchdogging myself at the moment, if I want to be able to afford to eat and piddly stuff like that.

Hi Drew,
Sorry for jumping in on the thread so late. The site you built is super impressive and it is a bit sad it has not attracted more attention. I am starting to work on some Open-Data in Montreal. From my 5 minutes on your site, I think one hurdle is the sheer amount of data that is presented. For it to gain more attention, someone (an intrepid investigative reporter - they still exist, right?) would have to digest it. Right now, the tables (even with the averages, large amounts, etc.) are hard to understand. At the end of the day I want to know about wasted money? It is possible the money, even large amounts, was efficiently used. The real question is whether or not it was wasted. Again, sorry for my brief comments on your amazing work, but do let me know how exactly you need help (from a designed/non-programmer type). In the spirit of openness, it would be nice to have a "download data"
button, where the data could be downloaded (in XML, MySql dump, etc.) for whoever else might be interested in building a mashup, etc. -Glen On 6 July 2010 07:50, Jonathan Brun <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hi Drew, > Sorry for jumping in on the thread so late. Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for noticing. Yes, I fully understand
your points. I've been speaking to the CTF about some sort of arrangement
of getting them the useful information they desire to publish quarterly. I
have been contemplating building a custom search application for it for this
specific purpose and having a members area for access to do custom
searches. It's mainly a matter of getting time to do this currently, as it
is still completely pro-bono. I'm thinking I may have to set up a fee
structure for the members area just to support the project (ie: enable me to eat
more than mr. noodles and energy drinks).
Any direct and useful comments are excruciatingly
appreciated!
Thanks,
Drew
