Re: Canada is falling behind the rest of the world on open data and open government

Harvey Low
Only comment on this article is that it does not touch on Canadian municipal initiatives. The quote: "Canada has an open data policy, and the federal government — along with several provincial andmunicipal governments — are happy to host open data for public consumption."  This to me seems to imply that the municipal sector follows along and seems an afterthought. In Canada,  the reality is it that it was grass roots from the municipal sector discussions and collaboration that started it all.

Then again the longer term successes of local municipal open gov approaches are very much affected and to some degree dependent by the success of Federal and Provincial OG and OD initiatives and any acknowledgement of intent and action is a good thing.

So the article starts with:

> Canada is falling behind the rest of the world on open data and open government
> It's time for the Harper government to step up their game, or explain why they're not

ok let's see.

USA:
>U.S. President Barack Obama has issued an executive order to the entire country that open data is now the standard, not the exception.

UK:
>The British government did the same thing in 2010.

and, and, and… that's all? :)

rest of the world = uk + usa. Hmm strange vision of the world ;)

Here a bit more information about Open Data policies in the *world* (still not perfect).
