XBRL Canada made a submission to the Canadian government on the development of mandatory payment reporting standards for extractive companies advocating that the reporting template be developed using XBRL. Does anyone have any thoughts on the benefits/drawbacks of XBRL as a data format? The National Energy board has been accepting electronic submissions for a long time. They use XML but one of the issues that came up was the associated schema. XBRL just seems to be a standard schema that uses XML and since companies are required to use it by SEC and the UK Revenue and Customs etc. it makes sense to standardize its use for other purposes. One of the big problems with open data has been the proliferation of formats and whilst XML helps here, XBRL helps even more and should be encouraged. +1. It has the advantage of being a relatively mature standard in this space. Certainly is the standard that seems to be embraced by the regulators in this field.
