Re: policy viz - State Gun Laws Enacted in the Year Since Newtown

Ted Strauss
Thanks for sharing this Tracey.
The take home of this piece: of 109 state gun laws that have passed since the Newtown massacre, 70 have loosened gun restrictions, 39 have tightened restrictions. No federal laws have been passed on gun control.

Major themes:
- conceal-carry permit records become confidential in several states (response to the publication of gun license addresses in NY state?)
- more school staff are allowed to carry guns, some concealed, in several states.
- gun restrictions for people with mental health issues
   - corrolary: mental health professionals required to report more about their patients; mental health registries -- stigmatize them!
- more background checks
- 4 states passed (out of 13 attempts) laws nullifying enforsement of Federal law
- stronger requirements for guns to be stored safely
- requirements to report lost/stolen guns
- bans/restrictions on assault weapons in 6 states

It's an excellent synthesis of a lot of information, and a carefully presented data visualization.
interestingly, they chose not to plot the data on a map.

Ted

The Guardian also did a visualization earlier this year: http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/jan/15/gun-laws-united-states

For those interested in geography, you can easily see that the Northeast is the least gun-friendly region.
