Hi folks,
This is somewhat prompted by Jury's email this week on developing standards.
Earlier this week we launched two websites describing two new projects.
The first website is to coordinate the development a new grant reporting standard for domestic grantmakers.
We (Ajah) have been extremely impressed with the adoption of the International Aid Transparency Initiative standard (http://www.aidtransparency.net) by international funders and we are seeking to emulate that success, in partnership with Michael Roberts and his organization, Groupsia. Canada is one of the best countries in the world in terms of the amount of domestic granting information available online, and we think that we're a great place to lead both developing this standard and also in adopting it. The second website uses our country's current practices in non-profit data as a model for the rest of the world, with the aim of improving non-profit data worldwide.
We have been somewhat stunned to discover just how much better our charity data is than almost all other countries. The US is comparable in terms of how much information is collected and made available, except it is still not digitized (i.e. available online other than as digital images). It's extremely important information and we've been able to use it to answer plenty of questions about the non-profit sector. By documenting the practices of all of the different charity registrars, we're aiming to create the conditions for a "race to the top".
Personally, I feel great about taking this step from lobbying for access to existing data to lobbying for better data. I know that some of you already do both, but I'm struck by the potential to leverage the "cool" halo of open data and the new techniques we've developed of popularizing these technocratic issues. I'm looking forward to sharing the results with you.
Thanks also to David Eaves who has been advising us. Regards _______________________________________________ CivicAccess-discuss mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.pwd.ca/mailman/listinfo/civicaccess-discuss |
Awesome! In terms of researching international regulators, I wonder if the OKF's network would help. On 2014-01-19, at 4:39 PM, Michael Lenczner wrote:

Thanks, James. We're certainly planning to crowdsource around the charity regulator project. It needs to become a local issue, so we'll be experimenting with how we can connect local sector leaders with open data advocates.

Congratulations Michael and Ajah on these projects.
I'm looking forward to learning more about this at next week's int'l development conferences. ted On Mon, Jan 20, 2014 at 12:30 PM, Michael Lenczner <[hidden email]> wrote:
