help wiki an ethics open gov briefing

David H. Mason

Hi all,

Please consider the following:

http://visiblegovernment.ca/w/Ethics_Standing_Committee

There hasn't been much response so far, I have to wonder if it's on the wrong
track; comments and edits are welcome.

"Right now open data projects are based on official data but are
hosted hosted on inexpensive servers around the world – the “cloud.”
In many cases, this is only suitable for experimentation."
??
The cloud is "only suitable for experimentation"?
Most large scale moneymaking apps are now hosted/deployed in the cloud.
What is this from, 1999?

"There's never going to be a profit model for these projects...."

This is a rather uninspired and incorrect. There will undoubtedly be a
number of apps based on Open Gov Data that will make money (and
profit), based on high hits and AdSense and perhaps purchasing from an
appstore.

I have to admit in the haste to open this up on line the last couple sections
are quite rough. But you did omit the key "In many cases" from your
exclamation. Do you think there's something wrong with the government setting
up a hosting service for citizen-serving open data apps, or should it all be
hosted at cloud providers like Google and Amazon? (yes, there should be
reservations about the government doing anything in an efficient manner, so
perhaps this facility could be crowdsourced).

Again, this is in reference to "in many cases," which does need to be
reinforced (although unfortunately provoking seems to be one of the few ways to
get people to say anything).

Ad-supported government is a novel idea with some obvious drawbacks (there's a
reason Wikipedia refuses to be ad-supported), but this is one of the
controversies that should be debated as we consider the efficiencies of the
cloud.

It would be helpful if you can iterate some appropriate cases of profitable
ad-supported or app-store open government. I haven't seen any, which is why
there is an attempt to frame this in terms of citizenship 2.0 and quality of
life rather than the money economy.

Regards,

David
