big data + open data + open gov

Tracey P. Lauriault

I just reviwed the action plan for big data skills development for Ireland, and was struck by the fact that open data and big data were considered to be drivers.  I then discovered that the early MicKinsey Global International (2011) Big Data report, which was the key document informing the modeling in the Irish one, and in it, mention of open data as a driver for big data.  The same MGI that did the value proposition for open data.

It is interesting, because the data in open data portals are by no means big data, they are almost exclusively small data, the census for instance is consided to be small data.  Anyway, something to keep our eyes on.

Especially in the context of the Feds using kijiji in lieu of gov stats
and the poor quality of the data yielded from the census, and the idea that there is more at play with the cancelation of mail to the door decisions and the cancellation of the long-form. http://datalibre.ca/2013/12/17/canada-post-report-data-analytics-direct-marketers-win-and-the-public-loses/

Who stands to gain from poor public sector data?
