I note I can buy the basic link it smart for $15 retail, I assume the temperature measuring module, particle module and humidity modules are $70 each. I'm obviously missing something. I probably browsed the site first to get a bit more info about the recommended placement etc. then ended up on the wrong page which asked me for my credit card number. For example under a tree would give lower temperatures and higher humidity, the north side of the house is closer to the highway so probably a higher particle count. Outdoor temperatures can be difficult to measure accurately, typically three home depot digital thermometers will give three different readings. My curiosity and scientific background are probably not ideal for this project. I suspect the idea is by averaging a large number of devices a higher level of accuracy can be obtained and by comparing the readings over time from the same device more data can be retrieved. I also have concerns about safety, battery power is one thing connected to hydro is something else. The power supply would need to be certified and waterproof. Was anyone able to find a data download page on their site? I tried to find one but could not. Their FAQ does not mention it. I also could not find any mention of the license of the collected data and if the sensor owner or the company has copyright on the data. I note that the City of Ottawa has a number of air quality monitors through out the city that measure eight different pollutants. I suspect the measuring instruments are certified to be a reasonable quality and the placement of the monitoring stations will have been thought out. and the one that is really interesting and fully open data as far as I can see is www.wxqa.com Operators of Citizen Weather Stations This one talks about the ideal locations for sensors and has some 7,000 stations in its network. Note to Steve how difficult would it be to align with the standards used by wxqa and interface to their back end system rather than build another mousetrap back end? Just to include Steve's comments. It would appear that www.wunderground.com is not as open as one might like which leaves www.wxqa.com. I note that there are a number of locations feeding this in Canada including Ottawa and Gatineau Airports but not Carlton University. I think my preference would be something that fed wxqa although particle count isn't there yet. Perhaps feed wxqa with what they can take and particle count to somewhere else. Mulling it would appear that rainfall information might be interesting. If you are more than say 5 kms from the weather station such as the airport the amount of rainfall can be quite different. Add in the price of water and with the right software gardeners can save considerable amounts of cash when watering the garden. Farmers might even be able to take advantage of this as well. You need a bit of software to pick up the closest weather station in wxqa but there is a fair amount of Canadian content there already. For example Calary has nine weather stations and Ottawa has at least the same number. In Canada rainfall is more complex than temperature. Often rain gauges are simply brought indoors during the winter to avoid freezing problems. So given the relatively low cost of the transmitting device I might be tempted to put it on a different transmitter. It also has the advantage of the optimum height for a rainfall gauge and a thermometer are different. Note to Steve how doable is this? I'd also seriously think about just using a battery pack or small solar panel to avoid problems with hydro. I have the impression that many schools have a high quality weather station but it may not be connected to the network. Note to Tracey its data that just needs opening up. For particle data I don't think wxqa collects this. So either smile nicely at them or collect all the data on Steve's servers and filter out the data wxqa is interested in and forward it to them. That might be simpler than having the device call home to two different systems. Solar radiation data is doable and might be of interest for solar panels. I'll go back to sleep now. Hi all,
Does by chance someone would have a spare smart citizen kit for a meeting in Montréal? We would like to do a meeting later in november and demonstrate what type of citizen projets could be done. For the moment, it's just a "trial" meeting, which is why we want to go just to demonstrate a smart citizen kit. If things move forward, we would get our kits. Thanks Stéphane
