The Cycle Transparency + US Tax filer data & migration Patterns

Tracey P. Lauriault

Introducing the Cycle of Transparency

As each element of the Cycle of Transparency moves forward concurrently, bringing about the changes we need to create a more transparent government, we also identify new needs.

Why Open Data? Because it’s your data

Last summer, Community Research Partners began work on a Data Byte report using the Internal Revenue Service’s county-to-county migration data. To compile this data, the IRS compares the address information a tax filer provided in her tax return to the one she provided the previous year. If the addresses are different, then that means she moved during the course of the year between tax returns. Adding up all this individual information provides aggregate statistics for broader migration patterns around the U.S.
