Last summer, Community Research Partners began work on a Data Byte report
using the Internal Revenue Service’s county-to-county migration data.
To compile this data, the IRS compares the address information a tax
filer provided in her tax return to the one she provided the previous
year. If the addresses are different, then that means she moved during
the course of the year between tax returns. Adding up all this
individual information provides aggregate statistics for broader
migration patterns around the U.S.
