In car navigation and smartphones are the new data and mapping infrastructures. Open Street Map is very good, national mapping organizations are great but neither of these necessarily have the boots on the ground to keep maintaining their street network files. The private sector with LBS, mobile phones and in-car navigation with millions of people moving in space providing updates is incredible and a game changer. It of course has been this way for a while, but all of a sudden, I am realizing how this space is getting very competitive!
How will governments keep up to date?
What will be the new authoritative street network data sources?
Can these be integrated with apps like WAZE or
511.ca?
How free will these data be?
How they will be made accessible?
What are the licences?
Will governments get a deal?
Will we still need ordinance surveys?
How much coverage will there be in rural, remote, and developing country areas?
What of accuracy, reliability and authority?
Will these become new framework datasets?
Can these be made open?
Do open data movements have to focus efforts toward both the private and public sectors?
Things to think about!
