StatCan Data Inventory Project (DIP)

James McKinney-2
Anyone know what the outputs of the StatCan Data Inventory Project were? The project seems to have ended and the data released, according to the link below, but I don't know where that data is. According to the documentation, this will feed into plans for data.gc.ca. Hopefully this data (or a report based on it) is available online - otherwise I guess I may be able to use the Treasury Board's new online ATI request form?

http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&SDDS=5190&Item_Id=122357&lang=en

Thanks for the help,

James

Re: StatCan Data Inventory Project (DIP)

Michael Mulley
I asked someone from the Treasury Board about this this morning. The data is not public due to the specific bureaucratic mechanism by which it was collected -- the survey was undertaken under the Census Act, which apparently does not allow the results to be shared outside of those who were surveyed. Publishing the results would require the Treasury Board to obtain specific authorization from all agencies involved; there is apparently some internal desire to publish the results and some kind of process underway to obtain this authorization, though it didn't sound like breath should be bated for immediate results.

(I'm relaying this and potentially garbling the details as I do so; I know nothing myself about the Census Act.)

It was also suggested that, even if this particular inventory project wasn't released, that the Open Government Directive (the first commitment of the OGP action plan, and due this year) would itself require the publication of data inventories by every department and agency.

Thanks for this, Michael!

FYI, Sunlight has mentioned the Data Inventory Project in a recent blog post: http://sunlightfoundation.com/blog/2013/05/13/how-unique-is-the-new-u-s-open-data-policy/
