I
think that with the actual media obsession about "ethics",
"transparency" and "accountability" it is the right moment to push
those ideas (Civic Access) in the media (e.g. editorial in the Globe and Mail and Le Devoir in Québec). Good Luck! Really really good idea Tracey ! :) I'll do the same for Montreal and my MPs.
Concerning the big media, I agree with Nicolas, but to me, it's too early. We have to work to establish a strategy and some arguments before. And Tracey is probably right when she reports that there's few media to work on systemic issue like data access. But there's (here, in the Québec Province at least) some journalist who start blogging. I hope they'll be more prone to treat this kind of issues. The first step is to complete the launch with communication to officials. Stef Selon "Tracey P. Lauriault" <[hidden email]>: > Thought you all would like this response! I'm going to send it to City of Kingston as well.
They insist on distributing PDFs of meeting minutes that are clearly crafted to thwart public examination and analysis. Picture this, if you will: the city treasurer submits his reports (presumably made with Word or the like) for distribution as image files. Therefore, none of teh text or numbers of the financial reports can be selected or copied into something else. Both his 2004 and 2005 reports are like this. What I mean is that the members could participate and get involved, when they can, as a citizen or as a CivicAccess Group, to every relevant political debate that has links to free and open-access to information (e.g. accountability policy, participatory democracy) and using the media to promote ideas related to the objectives of CivicAccess.
For example, people that could read French, Le Devoir has published my opinion last November, it was about a specific issue (rising of a new political force in Québec), but at the same time I have integrated the way "open-free-access" policies could be very helpful to improve our democracy in general, see this article on-line: http://www.ledevoir.com/2005/11/07/94415.html Ce que je voulais dire c'est que tous les membres pourraient participer ou s'impliquer, quand ils le peuvent, à titre de simple citoyen ou en tant que groupe Accès Civique dans les débats politiques pertinents qui ont une incidence sur la gratuité et l'accès de l'information (ex. politique d'imputabilité, démocracite participative) et d'utiliser les médias pour promouvoir les idées liées aux objectifs d'Accès Civique. Par exemple, Le Devoir a publié mon opinion au sujet d'un nouveau Parti Québec Solidaire, mais j'y ai intégré l'attrait des solutions libres et gratuites pour améliorer nos démocraties, voir l'article à cette adresse : http://www.ledevoir.com/2005/11/07/94415.html Nic ----- Message d'origine ---- De : Hugh McGuire <[hidden email]> À : civicaccess discuss <[hidden email]> Envoyé le : Lundi, 1 Mai 2006, 1h21mn 20s Objet : Re: [CivicAccess-discuss] Response to CivicAccess from the Mayor of the City of Ottawa's Office one big objective is to get some concrete projects in the pipeline. or at least get associated with some. that way we have something concrete to talk about with media, in addition to our statement of principles & direction. even a few small projects would be good. h. Bonne Idée!What I mean is that the members could participate and get involved, when they can, as a citizen or as a CivicAccess Group, to every relevant political debate that has links to free and open-access to information (e.g. accountability policy, participatory democracy) and using the media to promote ideas related to the objectives of CivicAccess. bonne lettre! For example, people that could read French, Le Devoir has published my opinion last November, it was about a specific issue (rising of a new political force in Québec), but at the same time I have integrated the way "open-free-access" policies could be very helpful to improve our democracy in general, see this article on-line: http://www.ledevoir.com/2005/11/07/94415.html C'est vrai ce que Hugh dit aussi, il faut commencer a déveloper des projects concrets. Par exemple, Le Devoir a publié mon opinion au sujet d'un nouveau Parti Québec Solidaire, mais j'y ai intégré l'attrait des solutions libres et gratuites pour améliorer nos démocraties, voir l'article à cette adresse : http://www.ledevoir.com/2005/11/07/94415.html Nic ----- Message d'origine ---- De : Hugh McGuire [hidden email] À : civicaccess discuss [hidden email] Envoyé le : Lundi, 1 Mai 2006, 1h21mn 20s Objet : Re: [CivicAccess-discuss] Response to CivicAccess from the Mayor of the City of Ottawa's Office one big objective is to get some concrete projects in the pipeline. or at least get associated with some. that way we have something concrete to talk about with media, in addition to our statement of principles & direction. even a few small projects would be good. h. Stephane Guidoin wrote:Really really good idea Tracey ! Lauriault" [hidden email]:Thought you all would like this response! I would encourage you to send to your city officials, MPPS and MPs. It is a way to get the issues and who we are on their map! I hope this is an initiative of interest to you and would very much enjoy speaking to you about this. Sincerely Tracey P. Lauriault 190 Booth St. Ottawa (ON) K1S 5B6 234-2805 Tracey P. We are motivated by the belief that open civic information and data are necessary for being engaged citizens in an "information society". Our goals are: 1. To encourage all levels of governments (county, municipal, provincial, federal) to make civic data and information available to citizens without restrictions, at no cost, and in useable open formats. 2. To encourage the development of citizen projects using civic data and information Access to civic information and data help us make informed choices as voters. In addition it helps to ensure government transparency and accountability - essential elements of a democracy. These are the bits and bytes required to understand, critically analyze, and re-envision the communities in which we live. As engaged citizens in our neighborhoods, cities, and provinces we are working to develop a community of practice on open civic data in Canada. This is an idea whose time has come. Please join us in making it a reality! *Founders:* Darin Barney, Marcus Bornfreund, Stéphane Couture, Patrick Dinnen, Daniel Faivre, Michael Geist, Stephane Guidoin, Michael Gurstein, Daniel Haran, Ted Hildebrandt, Alton Hollett, Cory Horner, Tracey Lauriault, Nathalie Leclerc, Michael Lenczner, Graham Longford, Hugh McGuire, Russell McOrmond, Robin Millette, Joe Murray, Michael Pilling, Joel Rivard, Gabe Sawhney, Phillip Smith and Marc Tuters.
