Thanks for this Catherine!
(I admit to having only really glanced at the graphic, seeing the relative size of Canada as compared to its OECD colleagues, nodding as it seemed to confirm what I already knew/assumed and passing it along :( (And you are right, on closer examination it is very confusing... (Ain't the Internet grand!) Tks again! (I'm copying this to the civic access list where I also sent the graphic... I find the infographic quite confusing, as it's combining measures. The OECD number used for the average connection speed (Table 5a) is an average ADVERTISED speed. I don't believe the actual average connection speed in Canada is anywhere near 21 Mbps. The CRTC (2009 figures) says that only 44% of Canadian high speed connections are at 5 Mbps or greater. Akamai's *measure* of average connection speed in Canada is 5.5 Mbps in Q4 2010. In my view, the average price for 1 mbps isn't a very meaningful measure for retail internet price comparisons (although can be useful in understanding pricing for ISPs, as Brian points out). I'm not sure where the $4.15 price for 1 Mbps number comes from. While the prices Canadians pay for internet (and other telecom services) are high relative to many other countries, I don't find this infographic to be particularly helpful in making that case. I kind of think this is OT for this list.
There are other lists to discuss internet connectivity in Canada. I like that CivicAccess has stayed on focus. It's of the things that makes it a great list. Sure, not a problem...
Also, as Michael L. and a few others on this list know, issues of "internet connectivity" and other things having to do with communities and ICTs/community informatics in Canada are discussed at http://vancouvercommunity.net/lists/info/cracin-canada . Folks are welcome to join and/or pass along the invitation if you know others who might be interested. Thanks, Michael. Nice to have you onboard and +1 on encouraging folks
to head to the CRACIN mailing list to discuss these topics. It's a good mailing list as well. Mike L.
