Position: Project Manager for the Community Information and Mapping System Project

Conditions:

  • 8 month contract

  • 35 hours per week at $50,000 per annum pro-rated

Description of the Position:

The Project Manager is responsible to implement a new project of the SPCO called the Community Information and Mapping System (CIMS).

The CIMS is an on-line data and mapping infrastructure for the voluntary sector in Ontario, through which groups can combine their own data with other information relevant to them, and support each other in community based research activities. The initiative is based on a population health framework, specifically, the non-medical determinants of health. It is developed in the tradition of participatory GIS initiatives, and will include a consortium of fee paying users.

The Project Manager will play a leadership role in the implementation of the CIMS. The main areas of responsibility are:

  1. To work with community partners and the technology consultants to ensure the web-based infrastructure is implemented and meets the needs of end users

  2. To develop partnerships, especially marketing to potential members

  3. To manage and monitor the first collaborative research project within the CIMS

  4. To design and implement the CIMS training and supports which will assist the capacity of community organizations to use data and mapping in their research, planning and evaluation

  5. To develop and manage the CIMS website

  6. To provide support for the collaborative governance structure

This position demands excellent knowledge of website development, geomatics and either collaborative community based research processes or community development / community education processes. As well, the candidate will need a good understanding of the reality of the voluntary sector, especially community and health organizations in Eastern Ontario.

Requirements:

  • Good knowledge of geomatics

  • Website development experience

  • Experience in marketing

  • Knowledge of a broad range of social and economic issues, particularly population health

  • Experience in project management to achieve expected results on time and within available resources;

  • Bilingual (French / English)

  • Experience working effectively with volunteers, professionals and community groups;

  • Masters degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Social Work, Public Policy, Population Health, Environmental Studies or related field, or five years related experience;

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team approach;

  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of consultants, student placements, and volunteers;

  • High level of computer literacy including database management, social statistics software (e.g., SPSS, PCensus, and Beyond 20/20), communication tools and ArcGIS;

  • Excellent writing, organizational, and presentation skills.

Experience in any of the following are assets:

  • Good knowledge of voluntary sector and health stakeholders, particularly related to the non-medical determinants of health

  • Good knowledge of the voluntary and health sectors in Eastern Ontario

  • Knowledge of research and evaluation methodologies, frameworks and ethics relevant to the voluntary and health sectors (re. non-medical determinants of health)

  • Knowledge of a non-official language

  • Provision of IT support

  • Experience in quantitative data analysis

  • Experience negotiating data sharing agreements and protocols

  • Data initiatives related to environmental issues

  • Ability to deal with multidisciplinary social policy issues and to relate research to community initiatives;
