Re: Open Source Archiving - used at UBS and City of Van

Bigelow, Sue

Yes, we’ve been involved in the development of this project since 2008.

http://artefactual.com/wiki/index.php?title=Vancouver_Digital_Archives

Not only is the project open source, but the development (for the overall project, link below, and our implementation, link above) is being recorded on a wiki.

Transparency in the system and the development process are useful, as in any open source project, to allow more eyes on the code and the improvements that would bring.

More critically, in the context of digital records, the records are being preserved in a transparent system. Preservation actions taken are being recorded automatically within the system. This means that you will know exactly what has been done to the records in order to preserve them. The system may have to create a “normalized” version of a file in order to make the file readable and usable into the future, but the original digital object is always saved in its original form.

We do this so that you can know that the records you access from the repository are authentic. We don’t put digital records into a proprietary black box and ask you to trust us that the records have been preserved as authentic. You can verify that this has been done.

This is excellent!  Are the city's open data in this system?  Geomatics Data?

Bigelow, Sue
We touched on this in this forum on June 6.

To recap briefly: not yet, but we're taking regular transfers of the City's Open Data.
