Open Gov conference in BC

Karen Fung
Hi Everyone!

First, a quick introduction — my name is Karen Fung and I'm a master's student at the University of British Columbia, School of Community and Regional Planning. I'm interested in the ties between open data and community engagement on sustainable development, and have been following what's been happening on this list with interest.

I'm also a Vancouver area liaison with a network of open government, transparency, gov 2.0, and civic engagement advocates based out of Seattle called Open Gov West, started by Seattle area non-profit Knowledge As Power.

We are having an event coming up in Victoria, BC on Nov. 10th called Open Gov West BC (OGWBC).  It follows on the first Open Gov West conference this past March, and is bringing together open government leaders from across the province and Canada.

While we've got quite a roster of government folks coming, we are also really interested in having those from technology companies, activist organizations, the academy and civic engagement groups join us. If this describes you, please consider coming, as we'd love to have you. If you know someone nearby who might be interested in this, we'd be thrilled if you forwarded this information on to them.

Some helpful links:

If you're a small business with 5 or fewer employees, get $55 off through Oct. 20th with code "smallisthenewbig"

While our conference agenda is quite full with amazing speakers, we've got room for a few more, esp. if you'd like to do an Ignite-style talk!

If you are at a company, get the word out about how your company enables and supports open government initiatives. Your sponsorship supports travel scholarships for nonprofit, student, and government attendees (many governments are under travel bans).

Also, if you'll be in Portland for GOSCON, consider joining us on October 26th for OGW Standards, discussing open government data and document standards, for application across governments.  Space is limited, apply now

Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like more information on either of the events or on Open Gov West, I'm happy to help!

Best,

Karen Fung
