Open Data Journalism - List

Tracey P. Lauriault
All;

I updated the section on open data journalism, it is imperfect as most
of those on the list are not exclusively writers or initiatives about
open data, but they are journalists who use data for journalism.  If
you have any to add do let me know and I will update the list.  I am
hoping to have a spot here to point people to resources and to people
in the media who can parlay your/our work.

http://datalibre.ca/links-resources/#Journalism, thanks Ricardo for your ideas!

Cheers

Re: Open Data Journalism - List

David Akin
Not sure my friend Kady does a whole lot of database, spreadsheet, or ATI work (and tho I love Nora Young's shows, really never heard any evidence she's dong database or ATI  work) but would happily recommend the following Parliamentary Press Gallery colleagues who do work in areas broadly similar to the scripting/ATI work done by many on this list:

Glen McGregor at the Citizen
Jim Bronskill at Canadian Press  (Ottawa bureau)
David McKie - CBC (Parliamentary Bureau)

Beyond Ottawa:
also suggest Fred Vallance-Jones (a former colleague) now at King's College, Dalhousie

Chad Skelton at the Vancouver Sun

I and all those journalists just mentioned have -- for a decade or more at least -- been sharing our data-crunching experiences on the mailing list for the National Institute of Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR). Details here:  http://www.ire.org/nicar/

HIghly recommend the NICAR-L mailing list as American journalists do far more in the way of crunching, analyzing, presenting state and federal open data than we do in Canada.

Re: Open Data Journalism - List

Rocha, Roberto (Montreal Gazette)

Nice list, Tracey.

Are you focusing exclusively on Canada? I see the Guardian’s data blog is there, so maybe you want to feature other excellent data work by foreign papers?

Texas Tribune

http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/

Chicago Tribune

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/data/

Washington Post

John Keefe at WNYC radio does very good work

One more thing: the hyperlink to Lucas Timmons’s site has an extra ) at the end of the URL.

This is super great!

I updated the list and thanked contributors http://datalibre.ca/links-resources/#Journalism!  If anyone wants to write a piece on datalibre.ca on the state of data journalism in Canada, or feature some good work that would be most welcome!
