Thank you Peter!
All, best to change the subject line when posting from the digest version! It makes searching the archive that much more lovely-er! I am not completely sure if this notice would be of interest to everyone on the list but I believe it may prove helpful to some. It concerns online digital versions of Debates from the House of Commons in both official languages. I just received the notice today. Hope it is useful. Best regards, Peter Duerr *Online Access to Historical Debates of the Parliament of Canada * ** The Library of Parliament is pleased to announce the launch of a project to develop a free online resource of the digitized historical debates of the Parliament of Canada. As part of a five-year collaborative arrangement with Canadiana.org <http://www.canadiana.ca/en/about>,digital versions of historical debates of the Senate of Canada and the House of Commons of Canada will be made available free of charge to the public in both official languages through a custom Web portal. Available in the spring of 2013, the portal's initial content will include pre-1900 digitized debates already held by Canadiana (currently available only by subscription) and more recent historical content starting with the 1^st Session, 34^th Parliament (December 12, 1988 and onward).[1] <imap://pduerr@...:993/fetch%3EUID%3E.INBOX%3E58415#_ftn1> The project will be completed over the subsequent 18 to 24 months, as the content for the remaining 80+ years is made available through the portal, working back through time parliament by parliament. For each parliament, we will process and load debates for both chambers and in both official languages.[2] <imap://pduerr@...:993/fetch%3EUID%3E.INBOX%3E58415#_ftn2> We anticipate that the full collection of historical debates will be available by the end of 2014. Users will be able to browse by session and individual sitting day using a calendar similar to that produced for recent debates; full-text searching will be available as well, as will an advanced search interface. More details on access will be made available closer to the release. The Library of Parliament is pleased to announce this collaborative arrangement and looks forward to feedback from the Library and user communities to assist in improving access to this important historical resource. Content for the 2^nd Session, 35^th Parliament (February 27, 1996 -- April 27, 1997) and onward is available on the Parliament of Canada website for both the Senate <http://www.parl.gc.ca/ParlBusiness/Senate/Debates/Calendar.asp?Language=E&Parl=35&Ses=2>and the House of Commons <http://www.parl.gc.ca/HouseChamberBusiness/ChamberSittings.aspx?View=H&Parl=35&Ses=2&Language=E&Mode=1>. 2Note that for certain early years of Parliament (pre-1900), some volumes of the /Debates/ are in fact reconstituted from newspaper accounts of the day; this content is clearly identified. Peter's post, FYI, prompted me to get in touch with Sonia and report about this. I'm a little shocked and pleasantly surprised that news about this initiative is one of my most clicked-upon blog posts!
