Obama Administration Places $200 Million Bet On Big Data

"In order to capitalize on the opportunity, the White House Office of
Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)—along with several Federal
departments and agencies—created the Big Data Research and Development
Initiative to:
• Advance state-of-the-art core technologies needed to collect, store,
preserve, manage, analyze, and share huge quantities of data.
• Harness these technologies to accelerate the pace of discovery in
science and engineering, strengthen our national security, and
transform teaching and learning
• Expand the workforce needed to develop and use Big Data technologies."

Nice.
I think Canada just cut research. /

"The big data initiative was created in response to recommendations
coming from the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and
Technology last year."
Fortunately, we don't have such meddlesome advisors in Canada. /

Includes some open data:
"The National Institutes of Health announced that the world’s largest
set of data on human genetic variation – produced by the international
1000 Genomes Project – is now freely available on the Amazon Web
Services (AWS) cloud. At 200 terabytes, the current 1000 Genomes
Project data set is a prime example of big data. The NIH said AWS is
storing the 1000 Genomes Project as a publically available data set
for free and researchers only will pay for the computing services that
they use."

NSF Leads Federal Efforts In Big Data

"The first round of awards made through an NSF geosciences program
called EarthCube, under the CIF21 framework, was also announced today.
These awards will support the development of community-guided
cyberinfrastructure to integrate big data across geosciences and
ultimately change how geosciences research is conducted. Integrating
data from disparate locations and sources with eclectic structures and
formats that has been stored as well as captured in real time, will
expedite the delivery of geoscience knowledge."
