  I agree with some of the commentators that this problem originates
with the Universities themselves.   Why should the inputs of
Universities be royalty-free if the outputs aren't?  Universities are
slowly moving towards Open Access, and this is ultimately going to be
the solution: they need to do the footwork to put the legacy publishers
out of business.


  I consider the hypocrisy in Canada to be even worse, where we have
education institution specific exceptions to Copyright (not even fair
dealings that apply to everyone) and yet there isn't balance on the
outputs where these same institutions are still allowed to collect
royalties.

  Students and the general public are being screwed, but why always put
the blame on others for a problem created within the educational sector?
