This is a great example of intelligent investigative geographic reporting. It is making the science of high-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking tangible to the public and also critically discusses the health effects.
When I consider open data, this is the context I think of, access to public and science datasets combined with good thematic analysis and visualization that help us unravel social, economic and environmental issues. Apps are good, but good research using public data opens up public policy discussions and hopefully provides evidence to act on improving it resulting in better outcomes for us all. Article:
