Found this clever initiative to come up with useful applications for government data APIs:

If a department doesn’t have an API of its own, but offer RSS feeds, use Yahoo Pipes or IFTTT to simulate one.

 

I use IFTTT to alert me to new datasets added to the Quebec and Montreal open data portals. We can probably think of a few more.
