How StatsCan charges for its data: this reporter got it wrong...

Glen Newton
In an article suggesting that StatsCan pay people to fill out the long
census form and recover this cost from the data users (an interesting
suggestion in itself!!):
"The cost could easily be covered by charging all those organizations,
including provincial and municipal governments, for use of the data."

The reporter erroneously reports that:
"Right now, the only charge Statistics Canada imposes for data is if
someone asks the agency to analyze the numbers to answer a specific
question"

We all know that unless you are looking for _aggregated_ data (or you
are at a university: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/edu/edu03_0000-eng.htm
or you want only a tiny sampling of the data
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/kits-trousses/microdata-microdonnees/census-recensement2001/edu06g1_0001-eng.htm),
you have to pay for the data:

"For purchases of more than one Census Public Use Microdata File, the
pricing is as follows: $1,000.00 for the first file, $300.00 for the
second file, $200.00 for the third file.
The total price is $1,500.00 if you purchase the Individuals File, the
Families File, and the Households and Housing File. " -
