Hello, and ICYMI The Economist discusses Open Data

David Brake
Dear all,

Hello - I am a scholar and ex-journalist with an interest in e-democracy and the social impacts of technology - I moved to Canada and joined the list recently and thought I would post to let you all know that the Economist just published a briefing in its upcoming issue about the open data movement. I don’t expect there to be anything in there that is surprising to you but it’s good to see open data getting a positive airing in such a high-profile publication. Check it out!

… and if you need a collaborator to help you communicate or publicise an open data project, learn more about me on my web page or drop me a line.

Re: Hello, and ICYMI The Economist discusses Open Data

Gerry Tychon-2
I would like to make a small comment. It is good that open data gets airplay in major media even if it is a rehash of other material. In The Economist story the author opinions:

“It has allowed governments to serve citizens better, powered innovative startups and improved people’s lives. But it is not yet clear whether it will effect a transformation. For that to happen, the enthusiasm that drove so much information online has to mature into cool-headed pragmatism.”

My feeling is that the open data movement now needs mature activism. The early activism focused around getting “something happening” even if deeply flawed. I think we now need to see how we can make systemic changes that allow for open data to be built into the system in a real way and is part of the everyday business of government.

... gerry
