I came across maps from Maplecroft (
http://maplecroft.com/) a few years ago while reviewing broadband maps and was impressed with their work. NOTE -
You have to register to access this free information.
The maps are aesthetically pleasing, indicator methodology is provided, as are data sources and a description of what is being viewed and measured. The maps also come with briefing reports, downloadable data and a scorecard of the risk. Further there are videos and atlases for a variety of themes. For instance I was looking at the
Political Risk Indicator and it is broken down into:
- Governance Framework
- Regime Stability Index
- Rule of Law Index
- Business Integrity and Corruption Index
- Corporate Governance Index
- 4 political Violence Indexes
- 5 Business and Macroeconomic Indexes
- 5 Regime Complicity Indexes
- 6 Supply Chain Complicity Indexes which include
- Child labour Index
- Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining Index
- 4 Social Resilience Indexes
- 3 Economic Diversity Indexes
- 4 Resource Security Indexes
- 4 Infrastructure Readiness Indexes
And that is just one set!
This is an example of a company that produces excellent information products which rely on myriad data from multiples sources. For certain types of decision makers this data and information is invaluable, particularly for policy makers. It is also an example of a private sector enterprise that could benefit from open data and it is an example of how open data and open government initiatives can learn to share data in a useful and insightful way with citizens.
Cheers
