Fwd: [liberationtech-jobs] Job: Code for America - NYC (Gotham) Brigade Captain

Michael Lenczner-2
1) This is a cool mailing list. They post jobs for technologists which are related to international development, free/open source/data, social justice, etc.

2) I'm amazed how quickly things are moving. Paid positions for community organizers to mobilize the geek communities. I didn't think that we were already there.

Right now, civic-minded hackers are working in cities across America to liberate data, deploy and sustain apps, and increase civic digital literacy using the web and government as platforms. In 2012, Code for America launched the CfA Brigade program to support and coordinate the activities of civic hackers across the country. In some cities, the opportunities are so great that we need help making the most of them. That’s why we’re hiring local organizers.

Local Organizer for New York City
Our ideal candidate will be a mix of entrepreneur, civic-nerd, coach and connector who is well established in NYC. You’ll be expected to keep your finger on the pulse of everything that’s happening in the civic technology space in NYC. But we need more than a reporter. We need someone who can organize the many communities of practice in NYC around common goals and objectives.

Our ideal candidate has experience as an organizer, is passionate about public service, and can build a network of technologists, institutions, and fundraisers to make the program successful in NYC. We need someone who is equally comfortable working inside and outside of government and who can motivate people to act, whether they be coders or fundraisers

Major responsibilities include:

  • Develop strategies and lead efforts to recruit civic hackers, partners, and sponsors.
  • Develop strategies, policies, and systems for sustaining and growing Brigade activities in NYC.
  • Develop curriculum, with support of government and tech advisors, for institutionalizing volunteerism in government technology
  • Oversee and lead NYC Brigade events, meetings, presentations
  • Oversee local finances and budget in collaboration with CfA staff

Skills/Requirements:

  • Significant organization experience in government and/or tech
  • Familiarity with and interest in public service
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel, attend meetings, networking events, etc, as needed
  • NYC based

Equal Employment Opportunity
Code for America values a diverse workplace and strongly encourages women, people of color, LGBT individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, foreign-born residents, and veterans to apply. Code for America is an equal opportunity employer. Applicants will not be discriminated against because of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, religion, national origin, disability, ancestry, marital status, veteran status, medical condition or any protected category prohibited by local, state or federal laws.

Hello Civic Hackers!

It’s been about two weeks since we launched brigade.codeforamerica.org. You signed on to the platform. You clicked some buttons to deploy some apps. That was cool.

Now What?
We’ll start communicating, organizing and refining our efforts. Specifically, use brigade-dev and your local forums to coordinate, ask questions, and schedule meetups. Report activities by sharing links. Jack & I will also connect directly with every Location. Don’t wait for us to reach you, though. Report status & activities to brigade-dev and contact us directly to schedule a conversation.

The platform at brigade.codeforamerica.org is a first iteration. We’ll build it out together. You are the first users. We need your constructive feedback about what works and what doesn't. The code is open source (repo address subject to change). We’re working on some adjustments based on early feedback. But the platform serves an important need right away: it connects people to projects in places. Stay connected.

Stories to Inspire
After Code Across America, civic hackers from OpenChattanooga turned to the Brigade network for help booting up Open Trip Planner. Thank you Open Plans’ Civic Works team and OTP Developers Group, who came to the rescue! There’s more to be done, but right now you can go to a public web site for Open Trip Planner in Chattanooga. That’s HackChatt. That’s Brigade. (It’s not all about the app.)

OpenSanDiego made two recent achievements from their experience in #codeacross. During the event they documented their experience with ArtAround and afterward they launched an Open Data Catalog. The new ODC provides a much wanted, sustainable capability to store data that is being opened locally on a recurring basis. (It’s not all about the app.)

Do this. Everywhere.

Calls to Further Action
Please do any of the following, if you have not already:
  1. Join brigade-dev, our public, moderated group email forum. Search app & locations to create or join topic threads.
  2. Start talking with the other users in your city using local forums. We’re glad to create [your brigade]@codeforamerica.org if you need a service, but feel free to create/use your own. Keep local forums publicly visible so we can link across forums.
  3. Create a github organization for your brigade. See these for examples: http://delicious.com/tag/cfa+brigade+github
  4. Report civic technology. If you don’t see a great, impactful, civic app that the rest of our movement should know about then add it to Civic Commons. Send the link to brigade-dev; we’ll reach out to the creators.

Best,
Kevin
