Fwd: The Budget ReACTion Project

Heather Morrison-2
Let's crowdsource reaction to the federal budget. Thanks to the amazing Raso sisters for spearheading this initiative.

Hi everyone;

As you may know, the 2013 federal budget was released today. In his speech, Minister Flaherty emphasized that his focus is on balancing the budget. As with the last budget, arguments about economic recovery are being utilized by the Harper government to justify austerity measures that have far reaching consequences for communities all across Canada.

What was perhaps most alarming about the 2012 budget was how many crucial services it cut. The mainstream media provided information about some changes including the redefining of waterways and amendments to the Fisheries Act. However, the majority of the contents of last year’s budget, including the cancellation of funding for the National Welfare Council, have gone largely under- or unreported.

In response to this situation, my sister and I have launched The Budget ReACTion Project: a grassroots initiative developed to help communities across Canada understand how the 2013 budget will affect them and the services that they rely on. BRP is currently working to connect Canadians in all parts of the country with local policy experts to provide a budget breakdown. The purpose of BRP is to facilitate communities learning about this year’s budget and mobilizing their responses.
Currently we are soliciting response pieces to post on the site. These pieces should be between 250-500 words and should focus on a specific aspect of the budget. Please consider contributing to this project as I think it has enormous capacity to help mobilize Canadians in response to this new legislation.
Full submission guidelines are available on the site: www.openthebudget.ca

Please email me if you have any questions. Thanks!

Katie Raso
