The OGC invites review of location data standards in energy and utility worlds
12 Sep 2013 – The OGC Energy & Utilities Domain Working Group (E&U DWG) invites you to attend presentations on Location Communication in Energy and Utility Worlds in sessions at the upcoming OGC Technical Committee Meetings. This is a unique venue for networking, learning about the OGC's standards development and relationship building processes, and shaping standards infrastructure to support institutional cooperation.
The OGC Energy & Utilities Domain Working Group sessions will be held from 1745 CET to 1840 CET on September 23 and 24, 2013.
The OGC Technical Committee Meetings will be held in Frascati, Italy. Registration for the OGC Technical Committee meeting entitles participants to attend all Technical Committee plenary sessions and all of the Domain Working Group meetings. Register at https://store.opengeospatial.org/. If you are not able to attend the Technical Committee meeting but are interested in attending in the OGC Energy & Utilities Domain Working Group sessions remotely, join the OGC Energy-utilities.dwg listserve for dial-in or login instructions, which will soon be sent to members of this list. Joining this listserve will also keep you informed about the Energy & Utilities Domain Working Group's activities.

The OGC Energy & Utilities Domain Working Group (E&U DWG) was chartered last year in acknowledgement of the significant and far reaching global opportunity that collaboration can play in maximizing the value of information technology for the international Energy and Utilities industry. This working group is focused on identifying the relative value of communicating "where" in a broad range of decision making and analytics scenarios in the Energy and Utilities ecosystem. The scope of the working group’s interoperability efforts includes data and systems that are traditionally associated with "smart grid," as well as interoperability needs related to oil and gas pipeline safety, smarter cities, integrated community energy strategies, energy efficient buildings, reduced power outage restoration times and other energy and utility activities.
About the OGC
The OGC is an international consortium of more than 475 companies, government agencies, research organizations and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, mainstream IT, and wireless and location-based services. OGC standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled. Visit the OGC website at http://www.opengeospatial.org/contact.

No, but dammit, it will be standardized and interoperable! On Fri, Sep 13, 2013 at 4:33 PM, James McKinney <[hidden email]> wrote:

Apologies for cross-posting. Here is an announcement from the Standup 4 Science organizers: ***** Fed up with the erosion of science in Canada? Want our government to support science in the public interest? Think that decisions should be based on evidence and facts instead of ideology? Join us on September 16th to Stand up for Science! It’s time to stand up for science in the public interest in Canada. In recent years we have seen cuts to many important scientific institutions, science funding has shifted focus towards the commercialization of research, and government scientists have lost the ability to communicate their research to the public. Science matters to Canadians. Good science, when coupled with good decision-making, keeps our water and air clean, keeps us healthy, keeps our food safe and prepares Canada for the future. Science in the public interest is crucial for our well-being and long-term prosperity. To make the public aware of this, and to call on the Federal government to make a strong commitment to science in the public interest, we are organizing ‘Stand Up for Science’ rallies across the country on September 16th 2013. It’s your future - make it your science. What: Stand Up for Science rallies When: September 16, 2013 Where: Across the country! Events in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and many more cities! Please visit our website to RSVP and see all of the event details! https://evidencefordemocracy.ca/standupforscience Or join the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1389399657955841/ We need your help to make these events a success. The Death of Evidence rally last July had a huge impact. We want to put these issues back in the public eye and let our MPs know that we demand better science policies. To accomplish this, we need your support. Please come to a rally near you and share this information with your friends and colleagues. We will be calling on the Federal government to make a strong commitment to science in the public interest by: (1) Funding scientific research from basic science through to applied. (2) Using the best available science and evidence to make the best decisions. (3) Supporting the open communication of publicly funded science to the public. Thank you very much for raising awareness and working towards evidence for democracy including the stand up for science rallies. Could someone please speak at these rallies to the importance of verifying / reproducing findings, including government studies used to justify policy-making? We (community members in a small town in BC) found that the methods used to create the numbers referred to in a report recommending the permanent closure of our only high school, were not the real methods used. We found out that the official statistical agency used the change in the number of telephone, along with electrical landlines, for the pop estimates forming the base to create to projections showing steep declines in school aged children. Our concerns to the Ministry responsible about the incorrect methods were met with quotes from a StatCan study asserting that BC Stats methods were better than StatCan’s. Curious, we asked for the study, or at least the title, only to be told after many months that the citation was being withheld claiming “Disclosure harmful to intergovernmental negotiations and relations”. Fortunately, StatCan did send us the study “The Equalization Program and the Property Tax Base: Feasibility Study Conducted by Statistics Canada” wherein we discovered that BC Stats sent incorrect methods to accompany the findings (showing very low error of closure between the census and BC Stats findings). To be clear, parents, guardians, and community members, addressing public school closures, as well as Statistics Canada assessing methods for equalization payments were given incorrect methods to accompany findings. May I suggest, that the public be aware of the importance of verification, and that citations accompany quotes (rather than withheld) and that correct methods accompany findings (rather than incorrect methods). By being able to see the correct methods we can better understand their strengths and weaknesses, and better understand what the findings mean. The Population Projection Project for Canada's census areas provides an alternative to using population projections that are not verifiable, and is receiving encouraging feedback from Demographers and potential partners in Canada, but also from the UK and the USA. http://www.wminfomatics.com/PopulationProjections/feedback.html We are promoting education / training in how to create population projections in high schools and universities, as well as open to the public. http://www.wminfomatics.com/PopulationProjections/About.html Thank you again for all your work raising awareness.
