These folks are looking for some help!
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Regie Alam <[hidden email]> Date: Tue, Apr 10, 2012 at 11:48 PM Subject: [Ottawa_users] Ottawa Tree Canopy Mapping Project To: "Ottawa (Canada) Local Chapter List" <[hidden email]> Hello, We at the Ottawa Forests and Greenspace Advisory Committee (OFGAC) have initiated a project called Ottawa Tree Canopy Mapping Project. What the project attempts to do is to quantify the amount of tree canopy cover (as well as other landcover classes, e.g. impervious surfaces) within the urban boundary. We have access to both 2005 and 2011 air photos from the city. A point grid (100-m distance) is overlain on the air photos and each point will be classified to whatever land cover class they fall on to. There are ~35,000 points for each of 2005 and 2011 so we are asking for volunteers to help us classify all of them. We are using Quantum GIS for the project because it works and allows us to distribute the software license-free. We initiated the project because there is a gap in the information about tree canopy cover in Ottawa. Supposedly, there is a tree canopy target that the city is aiming for but it is not known whether the city has reached it or whether there are differences between different areas. This project will attempt to provide baseline information which the city (or any other organization) can use to manage city trees. Information about the project can be found on the frontpage of the OFGAC website (http://www.ottawaforests.ca/). The site has a link to a .pdf document which contains additional information about the project. Please pass the information along to whoever might be interested in participating. Thanks, Regie _______________________________________________ Ottawa_users mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/ottawa_users Tracey P. Lauriault 613-234-2805 |
ZOMG, This feels like a project for OpenTreeMap
http://www.azavea.com/products/opentreemap/ It's open source, but likely requires some support from Azavea to set up but maybe not. Have heard good stuff about them but never used them myself. San Fran, Philly and a couple of other cities use them. D On 12-04-10 9:36 PM, Tracey P. Lauriault wrote: These folks are looking for some help! |
regie! I posted your note to civicaccess.ca and you got some ideas already! see below!

Azavea is the Company we hired in Toronto to build WELLBEING TORONTO which also includes a Tree Canopy layer.

Hi Tracey,
Thanks for posting it here!
The Ottawa Tree Canopy Mapping project won't be as detailed as that of the OpenTreeMap. However, what it does provide is general baseline information about the canopy cover within the urban boundary of the city. We chose this methodology (using dot grids overlain on air photos) the detailed tree inventory because it is relatively quick and easy. There's no server and other "complicated" technology to setup. Furthermore, it also tries to solicit volunteer help from the general population (even those that don't necessarily know that much about trees and/or technology). If you know what a tree looks like from above (i.e., from air photos) then you're qualified to volunteer!
Perhaps after this project and once there's more interest from the general population about trees and mapping then maybe we can start a more detailed inventory using OpenTreeMap.
Thanks again, Tracey, for posting this here and I hope many people will be willing to participate.
Cheers,
Regie

There is also OpenStreetMap, there are a few trees already in Ottawa, but it has the capacity to add in more. You might like to think in terms of specific trees of interest.
