Hi everyone,

OKFN want to improve the coverage of the Open Data Census
(http://census.okfn.org/) and verify existing contributions to ensure
information is still up to date and reliable.

Until June 12th, we need your help in doing this! There are 2 aspects:

1) Contributing on countries (national) where there is missing information -
you can do this right now, just visit http://census.okfn.org/country

For Canada, the missing information concerning the data at the federal
level is:

Government Budget | Company Register | National Statistics | Public
Transport | Environmental pollutants

2) Reviewing existing contributions - If corrections are necessary,
please send them to me via email or contact the author.

Thank you in advance for your contribution

Regards,

Open Data Census - Call to Action | Recensement de données ouvertes - Appel à contribution

Tracey P. Lauriault
Greetings all;

I just filled out the survey for the Company Register, Statistical and for Public Transport for Canada.  The survey is a bit difficult to fill out for countries that are federations as data are available at multiple jurisdictions necessitating a close reading of the notes and comments.  I added many qualifiers in the notes which are not available for viewing.

I would have liked to been able to review or add comments to the Environmental Pollutants entry and to add a another URL to qualify what was submitted.  Also, for the Elections data, there are election results for provinces and territories as well as municipalities and school boards.  I was unable to access the notes to qualify this.

As for public transit data, these exist for only some jurisdictions but the survey questions provided did not allow for that nuanced perspective, I did however provide notes which do not appear.  This is a major limitation as the top answer is only part of the response.  Any chance of making the notes available?

I think this is a very interesting initiative, but would have liked to have been able to nuance or qualify or add to submitted responses, would like to see the notes.

I think we need to be cautious with the current Canadian responses as they are incomplete (http://census.okfn.org/country/).

Does anyone want to give a go at the Government Budget response?  It is the only one left.

Sincerely
Tracey

Tracey thank you for your contributions.

Indeed, the census is for data at the national level, but not relevant to federations.
It is impossible to add such as Municipal Open Data that are very active in the field.

I will communicate your comments and suggestions to Sara Rahman, Christian Villium and Rufus Pollock.

For data on the "national" budget, there have been interventions on different lists. If necessary, the next week I will make special invitations.

Sincerely,

Diane

For environment;

I would add - National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) http://www.ec.gc.ca/inrp-npri/.  What was submitted in the survey is limited.  Also CESI, Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) http://www.ec.gc.ca/indicateurs-indicators/default.asp?lang=En.

Tracey P. Lauriault
Hi Christian;

I can't add them as someone else has already submitted something.  also, please set me up with the census list.  Re-the city census, that too will be tricky as we have provinces.

Here is a link to much of what you are looking for, but not all - http://datalibre.ca/links-resources/

Hi Tracey,

Seems very relevant indeed. Would you add them to the Census? Would be great.

Thanks,
Christian

The Canadian context is quite interesting as the really hard to get at but highly wanted admin/psi data are at the level of the province and territories because they deliver the bulk of health and social services, as well as transport, education, environmental monitoring and so on and this is where there is the least openness in Canada.  For things to be open we need provincial and territorial collaboration among themselves and then with the national federal government.  As for the cities, the federal government does not have the jurisdiction to intervene and therefore they too need to create a seperate entity to collaboration with each other.  All these jurisdictional issues really impede access to information and really impede the ability to do national analysis of local issues.

Hi Tracey,

Great, you're now added.

Intro mail and instructions:

How-to add (and review existing) datasets to the Census:

As for the already submitted sets, you can actually review and change them - see above email (the second link) for instructions.

I realize that provinces vs. regions vs. cities are difficult. Maybe you would be willing to write to the Census Editor list to raise this question? Maybe others have good advice on how to deal with it.

Hi Christian;

I can't add them as someone else has already submitted something.  also, please set me up with the census list.  Re-the city census, that too will be tricky as we have provinces.

Here is a link to much of what you are looking for, but not all - http://datalibre.ca/links-resources/

For environment;

I would add - National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) http://www.ec.gc.ca/inrp-npri/.  What was submitted in the survey is limited.  Also CESI, Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) http://www.ec.gc.ca/indicateurs-indicators/default.asp?lang=En.

Sincerely,

Diane

Greetings all;

Sincerely
Tracey

Regards,

- -

Government Budget | Company Register | National Statistics | Public
Transport | Environmental pollutants

2) Examiner les contributions existantes. Si des corrections sont
nécessaires, SVP transmettez-les moi par courriel ou communiquer avec
l'auteur de la fiche.

Nous vous remercions à l'avance de votre contribution.

Cordialement,

- - -
