We're working on getting the event recorded so it can be webcast. <snip> Pamela ********* Open Data and Urban Planning: Why is it so hard to say ‘yes’?
In many Canadian communities one new frontier for planner-citizen interaction emerges from the open data movement. In some cities, local governments are actively engaged in releasing municipal data through open data catalogues. With these data liberated, developers and urbanists are creating new apps to address important issues in their communities.
Transparency and civic engagement are two important expectations and requirements in urban planning practice and these two values are also central to the open data movement. Yet there are challenges in gaining access to urban planning-related data. The potential for misinterpretation of these data, for example, is a commonly given reason for declining data requests. Although it is early days, the frontier of open data in urban planning is full of opportunities and challenges that we need to explore further, with an aim to increase the use of open data in community decision-making in planning.
In honour of World Town Planning Day, the Ryerson School of Urban and Regional Planning in collaboration with the geothink.ca research team are hosting a panel to discuss the role of and access to open data in urban planning practice. We are holding the event on November 5th, at 105 Bond Street, room 312. We’ll have coffee starting at 8:45am. The panel will run 9:00-10:30am. Free tickets available at:
