The University of Toronto Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office and the University of Toronto Bora Laskin Law Library are organizing a national conference on the state of the nation three years after the Supreme Court "Copyright Pentalogy" decisions and the subsequent coming into force of the Copyright Modernization Act.  Aimed at academics, practitioners, and students, this conference hopes to examine the effects of the Pentalogy and the Act, as well as to serve as a forum for discussion on where we go from here.  We are currently seeking papers and panel proposals.

Papers and panel proposals should be focused on one of two categories:

Sensemaking, three years later:

Sensemaking is the process by which individuals and organizations grow to understand new ideas, events and their place within them.  This process can be complicated, and is made all the more necessary when there exists a wide diversity of subjective experiences and understandings of what is new.  This is particularly true in the case of the recent changes to and clarifications of Canadian copyright law.  This track hopes to engage in some sensemaking, mapping some of the diverse perspectives on the past three years.

The Future of Canadian Copyright:

What does the future hold for copyright in Canada?  What are the promises and perils? What are some unforeseen or under-discussed consequences of the “Pentalogy” and the Act? This track is for the discussion of what lies ahead.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION

The Program Committee invites proposals for partial or complete panel submissions of three or more papers. For individual papers, please submit an abstract of 400-500 words and a presentation title, along with a brief biographical statement, and your contact information. For complete panels, please submit a panel abstract of 400-500 words as well as a list of suggested participants including brief biographical statements, and a separate abstract of 400-500 words for each presenter. Please identify and provide participants’ contact information for the panel organizer.  Proposals should be sent to [hidden email].

The deadline for Proposals is April 17th, 2015.

Please save the date of October 2nd, 2015.
