FW: Petition to sustain funding for YI at CAS Program

michael gurstein

Canada`s (the Harper government`s) abandoning of it`s only program to support training and access for the 20% or so of Canadians who aren`t currently online (and the number would appear to be rising) is shameful.

A few hundred/thousand signers from our international peers might also be of some value.

I’d like to see all of you sign this petition.  The CAP Youth program has been one of the most successful (and inexpensive) government programs I have seen.  It has helped numerous youth get a head start in this amazing new world based on technology and rapid change.  At the same time, these youth have helped rural and small communities, and the people in them – of all ages, learn the basics of survival in our digital world.

It should not only continue, it should grow.

Subject: [OLSLIB-L] Petition to sustain funding for YI at CAS Program

Hi everyone,

Elgin County Library has been an active participant in the Community Access Program (CAP) since its inception.

The program was drastically cut back in 2011 when sustainabilty funding ended. The remaing funding was for the training aspect of the program.

Rural libraries throughout Ontario have used this program to hire local youth to provide computer training to people in their community. The program now called Youth Internships at Community Access Sites (YI at CAS) is funded on an annual basis.

I have personally worked with the youth over the past few years and have seen first hand the benefits of this program both to the youth workers and the people in the community. In these tough economic times it is important for youth to find work and also for people seeking employment to have adequate computer skills.

I have developed a petition to ask for permanent funding for the YI at CAS Program. Please follow the link below if you would like to sign this petition. You may have to copy and paste it.

Thank you.
