Not an Open Data license:

http://www.saanich.ca/data/licence.html
"By using the Information you agree to indemnify and save harmless
Saanich, its elected and appointed officials, officers, employees,
contractors and agents from and against any and all claims,
liabilities, losses, costs, demands, actions, payments, lawsuits,
damages (including any direct, indirect, special, incidental,
consequential, or other loss, injury or damage) and expenses,
including legal fees on a solicitor and own client basis, arising out
of or in any way connected with
your breach or violation of any of the terms and conditions of this Licence;
or
your use of the Information."

We had this exact discussion in 2012: http://civicaccess.48776.x6.nabble.com/Open-Data-Saanich-BC-td5046.html

I’m not clear on why links to open data catalogs are created as one-off emails, especially when some of these data catalogs have been discussed on this list before and have been around for years...

Re: District of Saanich Open Data

James;

I found them, they were not in my list on datalibre.ca, sometimes discussions come back and sometimes they are forgotten, and many new people join the list!  I think you will be fine with the odd redundant email!

Yes, the licences are not always open, certainly not in the way we think they should be, but these jurisdictions call themselves open and it is for this reason that I sent it alontg!

Finally, it was late at night, I was doing something, and I would rather share the intel rather than forget!

Cheers

Re: District of Saanich Open Data

Might I gently ask that instead of sending 9 emails in 30 minutes, you simply send all the data portal links in one email? Is that asking too much?

Re: District of Saanich Open Data

In reply to this post by Tracey P. Lauriault
I think we need to be able to revisit issues. And I also feel we need to put some criteria in place to judge the efforts/commitment of organizations to open data.

If an organization like Saanich doesn't have a real open data license and they only posts 4 items as "open data" (Events Calendar, Garbage Schedules, Jobs Feed, News Feed) are they really committed to open data?

... ggt

Re: District of Saanich Open Data

James McKinney-2
Certainly - all I meant by my message is that I want to avoid a situation where we have identical conversations every two years. The linked thread from 2012 [1] has the exact same content and the exact same participants as the start of this thread: Tracey shares the same link, Glen quotes the same problematic section of the license. If it were different people and/or different content, great! You are now providing new content, and that’s great.

My bad James: I should be checking the archives if I've previously
pointed out the problem.
A problem with that is with re-posting, it suggests that everything is OK.

Re: District of Saanich Open Data

James McKinney-2
My broader point is that for a mailing list to be useful, the signal-to-noise ratio can’t be too low. “Signal" is good content that people care about. Not all content will appeal to everyone, but as long as enough content is appealing, people stay subscribed. When anyone spams the list with nine one-link messages in half an hour, it drops the signal-to-noise ratio and the list because that much less useful. I know many people who leave lists when there are too many messages that they personally don’t care about. Instead of spamming, just put all nine links in one message. Is it so offensive for me to suggest that small bit of effort to improve the usefulness of this list for everyone?

The fact that the spammy messages were also redundant just made matters worse, but the redundancy is not the main issue.
