Company registry transparency - Please help fill a quick survey!

James McKinney-2
Hello all,

OpenCorporates, an open database of companies worldwide, recently surpassed 40 million companies across 52 jurisdictions. Looking at the queue of experimental jurisdictions, it is well on its way to doubling that!

Chris Taggart (UK, not the Chris Taggart in Canada who made fixmystreet.ca), its creator and friend of mine, would like your help in a project to score OGP governments for the openness of their company registers. He and other volunteers are covering the rest of the globe, but since Canada has several registries, I volunteered to help.

It needs to be done before the Open Government Partnership in Brasilia, April 17-18. It's only a quick survey, so it should not take long! For each item below, there's a link to the company registry and then a link to the survey.

Cheers,

James

The Saskatchewan link has changed since I last checked. It is now http://www.isc.ca/CorporateRegistry/Pages/default.aspx

You are encouraged to look for other government data on corporations. The links I provided are just the most interesting I'd been able to find.

Filling this survey for SK was really disappointing. Thanks for setting this up James. The data from the survey could be very useful. I assume the results themselves will be open data?

Re: Company registry transparency - Please help fill a quick survey!

Tracey P. Lauriault
This was an interesting looking into things!

I found the feds and Quebec to be the best, although none of them include annual reports and none provided tools to search by director name, as that would allow seeing how many companies one person is a director of.  It might also be good to search by company types.  Shame about all the pay wall in most of the provincial registries and the fact that this is an outsourced service.

I had to use these systems 2 years ago to research a corrupt Malaysian Chief's Minister's properties and businesses held in the names of his children here in Canada - http://www.stop-timber-corruption.org/campaign_update/; http://www.world-wire.com/news/1102280001.html (Sakto) and at that time there was no easy search engine, and searching physical properties through the land registry was complicated, archaic and expensiive (http://world-wire.com/2011/12/07/canadian-property-developer-sakto-admits-taib-involvement-%E2%80%93-bmf-maintains-money-laundering-allegations/, Ottawa - http://www.sarawakreport.org/2010/06/exclusive-taibs-foreign-property-portfolio/)

Thanks for putting this together.

Cheers

The "audited" results will be published, as the goal of this project is to give jurisdictions a transparency ranking for their company register. This sort of thing is often effective, as generally no government wants to place last in any ranking. As mentioned, Chris Taggart will be at OGP to present the results.
