Census Charter Challenge in Court Tomorrow Morning 90 Sparks Street, Room 1104, and starts at 9:30 am - Nov 23

Tracey P. Lauriault
Hi Everyone –

I am reminding everyone that we are in the Federal Court tomorrow to argue the census challenge.  It is in Ottawa at 90 Sparks Street, Room 1104, and starts at 9:30 am.  I have already been called by Global News and they will be covering it.   Our judge is relatively new to the bench, Justice Mandamin.  No major Charter cases and an appointee of the current government.  Still, being appointed gives on a lot of independence so we’ll see. Again, we are not asking the Court to order the government to do the census over again.  We are asking the Court to declare the Census 2011 as discriminatory and in violation of s. 15(1) of the Charter because it counts or enumerates some groups but not others.  My line to the media is that this provide some guidance for the government to ensure it conducts the next census in a manner that complies with the Charter. Peggy, I hope you are coming!  The press will likely want some comment from one of the groups.

Cheers,  Paul Champ
