Public Economics Data Analysis Laboratory (“PEDAL”)
Department of Economics
McMaster University
Director: A. Abigail Payne
PEDAL was started in the fall of 2004 with funds from the Canadian
Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Innovation Trust, and McMaster
University. The purpose of the laboratory is to develop high quality
research data sets that may be used to study various Canadian public
economics issues. PEDAL has both the infrastructure and human
resources to collect and clean major datasets, filling in the lack for
comprehensive Canadian data related to public economics. PEDAL’s work
thus far has focused on provincial based data sets. These data sets
complement the work undertaken by Statistics Canada.
Current projects concern education policy issues at the elementary,
secondary, and post-secondary levels; issues concerning donor and
government behaviour with respect to the charitable sector; studies on
various topics of political economy.
The Laboratory has several levels of security, allowing for the
storage and protection of sensitive data not publicly available. PEDAL
is also used for training students, gathering groups of researchers,
and empirical analysis. Current members of PEDAL include researchers
at McMaster University, University of Toronto, and several U.S. and
U.K. universities.
