Canada launches spending database without transactional spending data?

Hi all,
(sorry for crossposting)

The Canadian Treasury board this week launched a database on expenditure [1], which received quite a bit of coverage [2].

As far as I can tell, the database does not include any transactional spending data [3], but only expenditure data across programmes, sub-programmes etc.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone can help shed some light on this and possibly share the reactions from the Canadian open data community?

Thanks,
Anders

[3] As for instance released in the UK at http://data.gov.uk/openspending and US at usaspending.gov

Hi all,
I set up a data browser for the recently released expenditure database.
Access it here -- http://spenditures.ca
This is high level budget data. It doesn't include transactions, to answer Anders' question.
Some budget items are in the 10s of billions, so you could say it's lacking in detail.
Nonetheless, if you want a big picture of what the government is spending money on, this page can help.

Cool, Ted! Would it be possible to add the data to OpenSpending? http://openspending.org/help/data-loading.html It should be straight-forward, and then you immediately benefit from all their visualizations, etc.

I'm curious to know which budgets didn't spend as much as allocated. It seems like in most cases, those values are equal.

Yes that should be pretty easy. I've converted 1 of 3 excel files to csv, so I can import that one and see how it goes.

I'm curious to know which budgets didn't spend as much as allocated. It seems like in most cases, those values are equal.

There are many exceptions to that rule you can find. Adding a feature that treats the difference between allocation and spending as a filterable quantity would be a good. Let me know of any other ideas or questions that come to mind.
