The new things I've noticed today: - Relaunched data.gc.ca. Looks nicer, based on CKAN so now has an API. - data.gc.ca now has a government-wide search engine for ATI request summaries. The search engine is new, right? It's certainly a useful tool.
- New license version [1]. It struck me as rather good: clear, straightforward, nothing I objected to.
- Signing the G8 Open Data Charter [2]. The charter is notably well-written (I get a feeling the UK is responsible?) and says many right things and no wrong ones, though -- as a document signed by eight countries -- it's not tremendously demanding or specific. The most interesting bit to me was the list of high value datasets, in 6.2. It's a good summary of openable datasets, and includes things like "company/business register", "transaction spend data", "call for tender" -- datasets I think many of us would be quite interested in having here. The charter calls for countries to release action plans in October describing how they'll release data in each of the categories in the list.

Teresa Scassa did an excellent review here of the new licence! Seems like they got it right.

Yes, ATI summaries search engine is new, much better than visiting 170 websites! However, the link to download the bulk data is broken. I can find a dataset through the dataset search, but all the download links fail: http://data.gc.ca/data/en/dataset/0797e893-751e-4695-8229-a5066e4fe43c I've reported the issue.
Also new: - You can vote up suggested datasets http://data.gc.ca/eng/suggested-datasets (You apparently cannot vote up from the summary page, so you need to click through to the dataset) - You can rate and comment on individual datasets - 5-star rating on each dataset http://data.gc.ca/eng/openness-rating, based on Tim Berners-Lee's rating scheme - A mysteriously opaque RSS feed for each dataset e.g. http://data.gc.ca/data/en/dataset/48f10fb9-78a2-43a9-92ab-354c28d30674 - There seems to be a preview of geodata, but it just renders as a big triangle for me - Reports on past consultations, including recently completed roundtables: http://data.gc.ca/eng/consultations - A nod to Sunlight Foundation http://data.gc.ca/eng/open-data-principles - A nod to Open Knowledge Foundation http://data.gc.ca/eng/open-data-101 - CKAN API http://data.gc.ca/eng/access-our-application-programming-interface-api It looks like the Action Plan hasn't been updated (if it has, the changes must be minor - anyone know?). I would really like to see Canada sign the Arhus convention: http://ec.europa.eu/environment/aarhus/ More important than IATI, in my opinion. Anyway, an improvement despite various bugs which I assume will be fixed shortly. Vote up the postal code database! http://data.gc.ca/eng/suggested-datasets/postal-code-database James On 2013-06-18, at 12:21 PM, Michael Mulley wrote: > The new things I've noticed today: > > - Relaunched data.gc.ca. "Geospatial Topography, postcodes, national maps, local maps" Is the PCFRF problem solved now, given the shapefiles for the riding boundaries weren't the problem but the postal code shapes? Wonder if someone will claim that this is a release of a list of postal codes, but not the required geospacial data as the chart suggests. It was partly a joke, given there have been multiple announcements over the last decade that have suggested that the government would finally release this simple amount of data under a reasonable license. Even though it does not seem to be
officially announced, the code used for the CKAN
