"These additional data sets come from several federal government organizations and include population and economy tables from Statistics Canada, import-export data from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and border wait times from Canada Border Services Agency." The most exciting dataset I've found so far is "History of the Federal Electoral Ridings, 1867-2010", which has federal elections results since confederation and includes the candidate's profession. Last spring I had scraped this data myself (and learned that some ridings in the past elected two MPs instead of one), to see if having a large majority in a previous election was a good predictor for outcomes in an upcoming election (it wasn't, unlike in some other countries like the UK according to nef research: http://www.neweconomics.org/publications/the-voter-power-index). http://www.data.gc.ca/default.asp?lang=En&n=5175A6F0-1&xsl=datacataloguerecord&metaxsl=datacataloguerecord&formid=EA8F2C37-90B6-4FEE-857E-984D3060184E Anyway, I'm happy to have that much less code to worry about. Has anyone found anything of significant interest amid the 260,000 datasets? We could really use a better search/grouping interface. There might be interesting Agriculture datasets (out of 3198), but I won't find it among the 938 about chickens and 1234 about dairy (you can't exclude words). |
not in there but I did find this at the Internet Archive that can be used to complement your historical research -
it takes some digging to find what you want in them, but when you do, it is pretty good! you'll also discover that turn of the century gov reporting was way more informative and comprehensive than it is now!

I just realized - I had requested this dataset! If anyone was waiting for evidence that people are listening to requests, here's one example.
Has anyone else who's requested data checked if it's been made available?
